I Dare Ya!
When we lose the right to be different, we lose the privilege to be free.
Charles Evans Hughes
If there are things you don't like in the world you grew up in, make your own life different.
Dave Thomas
I was afraid of being different. Being different meant that people might turn away from me, and I might lose my connection with them.
But I began to realize, If I’m afraid of being different, how can I possibly say and do the things that are important in my life? And if I don't show you the real me, then how am I ever going to give up the protective behaviors that mask my true potential?
Giving up protective behavior begins by recognizing that, indeed, all of us are different. This difference isn't bad or good. It's just who we are. Embracing who we are and recognizing our own uniqueness is what gets us in touch with our confidence. When we unleash that confidence people will relate to us positively, despite our inadequacies.
So....here are ten suggestions on daring to be different!
1. Forget Fashion! Style is what really matters. Never wear things because somebody else is wearing it. If you want to be different, then you have to be your own role model.
2. Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone! Some people may be intimidated by your new found uniqueness, but don't let that get you down. There will be people who like your utter disdain for anything popular. Who gives a rip!
3. Do Stuff You Like! You might even want to look for strange new activities that you've never heard of, remembering to be safe and . For example, when others are ordering burgers, order a vegetarian hoagie or when others are ordering a pepperoni pizza, order one with just cheese and mushrooms on a whole wheat crust.
4. Give Up TV! (Well at least for a while) Practice yoga, try reading something or go for a hike.
5. Offer To Help Someone. Especially if you normally run the other way when jobs need to be done.
6. Listen to Jazz, Blues, or Rockabilly Music. If your crowd normally listens to hip hop, alternative, punk, metal, and so on.
7. Learn to Play a Different Instrument. Try a tuba or trombone instead of a guitar or piano.Okay, maybe not those, but you get what i mean, right?
8. Find A Mentor. Find someone you can look up to. Mentors can be critical to growth and success in your life.
9. Practice Meditation. Seems like we are always surrounded by noise, so get quiet for a change. I personally enjoy this kind of meditation.
10. Challenge Assumptions. Ask why and what if? Consider approaches you’ve never thought before.
What other things can you add to this list to helps others be all that they are called to be?
