Music To My Ears

It’s Music to My Ears

I like music. I listen to music for different reasons, usually to relax and disconnect from my stressful life. I find it helps me to even make decisions because I am able to get away from an intense situation and get a better perspective.

Here the deal, I don’t really have a favorite style of music. I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s listening to The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd and more! I still listen to them. I also enjoy some of the newer stuff from Coldplay, Ingrid Michaelson, Foo Fighters and Daughtry. I am a follower of Christ and I enjoy some “Christian music”.

The Beatles of course consumed many thousands of man and woman hours in their day. They still do, along with Mozart, Whitney Houston and the Spice Girls. Whenever people play, listen, dance to, or talk about music, the music is consuming a limited resource of people's time and energy.

Why is music so powerful in our lives today? Why do you think we like different flavors of music? What do you like to listen to? Why?

Music to me can be a drug, an outlet, an art, and a mood setter. My music tastes have changed over the years... it all started when as a toddler I danced to salsa and merengue artists featured in the daily lunch time entertainment TV show. Then I found myself signing "Cama cama cama cama cameleon..." by Boy George, but I had no idea what the words were or what they meant because I knew no English (neither did I know who or what Boy George was). Soon, after I learned English, I was hooked on James Taylor and other soft rock artists from the 70's and 80's. The 90's brought me to some Spanish love songs, Christian music, and country music, yee-haw! This decade I listen to big band, old jazz, opera (the three tenors), classical, bossa nova (my husband's influence), 70's and 80's oldies but goodies like Chicago, Journey, Toto, Eagles, etc (NOT Michael Jackson with the exception of Thriller, that was a good song!), and some Christian melodies (mostly hymns). If you play some country music, I will dance to it--what fun! I think I will dance most anything except the lambada, macarena, or anything that involves rubbing on something or someone. Disgusting. Anyway, "that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!"
